Introduction
SOP: Ordering PCR Testing and Follow-Up Compounding of Antibiotics
Purpose:
To streamline the process for providers to order PCR testing and biopsy diagnostics, receive results, and place orders for compounding antibiotics. This process involves both the Intake Coordinator and the Provider.
Procedure:
1. Ordering PCR test kits:
- The Intake Coordinator will place an order for PCR test kits from the lab to be delivered to the Provider’s home.
2. Sample Collection:
- The Provider will determine if the patient requires PCR testing of a wound.
- Using the test kit provided by the lab, the Provider will collect and label the sample as per lab instructions, then mail it to the lab using the pre-labeled and stamped envelope.
3. Result Notification:
- The Intake Coordinator will review the lab portal daily and notify the Provider of the test results via email.
4. Documentation and Antibiotic Ordering:
- Upon receiving the lab results, the Provider will document the results and determine if there is a need to order compounded antibiotics and notify the Intake Coordinator.
- If compounding antibiotics are needed, the Intake Coordinator will send the patient’s face sheet, a cover letter with the Provider’s contact information, and the lab results to the compounding lab.
5. Finalization:
- The Provider will review and sign the order for the compounded antibiotics upon receiving it via email and return to the Intake Coordinator for dissemination to the compounding pharmacy.
